As a stratovolcano, Mount Batur (locally known as Gunung Batur), is a cone which is active and continues to grow from the floor of two concentric calderas.

It is very difficult to describe the view from either the summit of Batur or from the viewing areas along the southern rim of the outer crater in the village of Penelokan.

But once seen, it will easily be remembered as one of the most stunning vistas on the planet.

It is chilly in the early morning darkness. And quiet. Perhaps the sound of a solitary motorbike or a car or truck can be heard along the main road to the south. Even the birds are still asleep. It’s not pitch black; more like deep indigo, as the sky begins to lighten to the east.

You’ve just spent the last two hours climbing along switchbacks, torch in hand, ascending the 700-meter, active stratovolcano known as Mount Batur.

The tour begins in the Ubud area at around 01:00 (1AM), with a drive north and then a hike up to the Batur base camp.

Sunrise, depending on the time of year, will be at around 06:15 and breakfast will be served at around 07:15.

From around 08:00 to 09:00 the group will explore the area around the summit crater. Then it’s an hike back to the parking area, finishing up with a healthy brunch at around 10:30.

Requires a spirit of adventure, good health and a reasonable level of fitness.

Like any trek, packing the right gear and supplies will make the experience much more rewarding.

It is chilly at the summit, so dress in layers which should include a waterproof shell, as the air may be damp.

Once the sun rises, the temperature does as well.

A hat and sunglasses are essential.

The right pair of footwear (not sandals) is important. Make sure they are broken in and can handle the sharp scree along the paths.

It might be a good idea to pack an extra set of socks and undershirt, just in case.

Pack lightly but efficiently; water, snacks (dried fruit and nuts are good choices and easy to find in the local supermarkets),

Torch (flashlight) will be offered. If you have your personal preferred torch, please bring it with you. For example, head - torch is ideal for the trek.
