Today’s ride will take you to the north west corner of Bali, and to the small traditional village of Manistutu.

Here we want to welcome you and introduce you to our family and friends, as many of us were born and raised in this little Balinese village.

The road zig-zags through Manistutu, with the stunning backdrop of Gunung Merbuk and Gunung Musi leading us to the Bendungan Bendel dam. And here is where the bikes await us! Once helmet and gloves are on and we have gone through the instructions and safety awareness, we are ready to ride.

We start by conquering a couple of hills, to be well rewarded with a stunning view overlooking Gilimanuk Bay and the outlines of eastern Java’s coastal beaches.

Once these hills are mastered we have the anticipation of that exhilarating feeling you get riding downhill! Sometimes the speed is enough to take you straight over the next buckle, and sometimes you need to peddle just that little bit harder to reach the next peak.

Prepare for some fantastic riding as you zoom past rice fields and through local villages. For those of you who prefer your ride to be less physical this part of the trek can be modified into an easier route, or you are welcome to take a rest in the car!

Along the way you can see the “kebun” – beautiful gardens of fresh seasonal fruits, like mango, rambutan, starfruit, soursop.

After a couple of kilometers we pass Putu’s house, where we get off our bikes to sample a variety of some of the most delicious in-season tropical fruits Bali has to offer, some of them picked straight from the tree.

A couple more kilometers down the village road we’ll visit the local school. Most of our Yatra tour guides attended this school, so they can offer you special insight into their life as students there, and get special access to the school’s premises. As not many visitors pass through this way it is a special moment for the students to greet you and practice a few words in English.

At the family compound, we greet the elders and have a short Balinese ceremony expressing our gratitude to Mother Earth. You will also get an insight into what is Aling Aling, Kosala Kosali and Tri HIta Karana.

As we leave the simple traditional village of Manistutu we can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing ride along off-road tracks, pedaling as if into a beautiful painting of rice paddies and the calm stillness of unchanged village life, the cows with their calves gently glancing over as you ride past.

Our final stop is at “ Yayasan Sanatana Dharma Jembrana “, where you will meet the kids and young people who have been born into less fortunate situations and backgrounds. As part of our desire to be able to give back and help the less fortunate we have food, toys and other necessities we wish to bring to them.

Recreational

For the most part the ride is downhill and requires an average fitness level.

There are a few inclines and the occasional challenging hill, so it is best if you are a comfortable rider who can maneuver different terrains.

The few climbs on the ride are optional and can be avoided with transfers.

A support van is always nearby to support you in case you prefer to step off or need a break.

During my yogaretreat at Bali I went on the bikeride through the rice fields of Bali. The guides Ingela and Bruce took us to the villages that you would never find on your own and we got to come in contact with the people living there. Also we were informed about the culture and religion. The Waterfall hike was amazing. They took us to places in the djungle that was breathtaking. The tour ended in a village where Ingel served us a traditional Balinese lunch. Memories that I will keep in my heart for the rest of my life, so grateful.

I had such a beautiful morning riding through the Bali countryside, gliding through rice fields, stopping to take in the breathtaking views and learn about farming and local plants. The whole trip was extremely well organised and I felt well taken care of, allowing me to relax and enjoy the ride! The temple visit was incredibly special. Overall a unique way of seeing this amazing island. Morag
