Yogaday in Ubud

just a little way from the centre of Ubud.

The giant banyan tree enfolding and shading the Shala is a sacred tree to Hindus; its ancient gnarled and mossy trunk with its curtain of glossy leaves seems as though itʼs a forest but is in fact a single tree, lending an especially organic quality to our Sama Yoga class.

Together we begin with a gentle grounding and heart-opening session.

The practices and discipline that Sama Yoga teaches help us to harmonize and balance ourselves in every aspect of life, as well as encouraging growth in understanding which choices will bring us equanimity. Sama Yoga is taught intuitively from the heart, bringing us back to ourselves, to land in a relaxed state where we can allow trust and contentment in whatever life may bring. Sama Yoga helps to bring us balance and health physically, mentally and emotionally.

In Asana classes, we encourage our attention to be focused on inner alignment rather than outer. Performing the asanas with deep respect and love for your body and accepting it as it is that day. Replacing any mechanical ego-driven types of movement to those that are organic and accepting, allowing the body to give itself what it needs in the moment.

After class a short walk through the rice fields shows us traditional permaculture in action – ducks scrabbling for food in the watery paddy fields undisturbed by those walking or working near them, in perfect and sacred symbiosis.
We arrive at the Bamboo House, the house with no walls, surrounded by the rice paddies and views of the sacred mountains, Batu Karo and Gunung Agung.

Here flowers and coconut leaves are already prepared for us so we can teach you step by step how to make your own flower offering basket. These are called Canang Sari. Canang is the little woven basket and sari is the essence of the offering, which will be carried away in the smoke of the incense.

An organic vegan lunch is served on the terrace with the soothing sounds of the breeze, and the ducks and frogs in the paddies as the peaceful backdrop.

Before we take our offerings to the temple together we help you dress correctly in a sarong with a brightly coloured sash. Then it is just a short walk over the bamboo bridge and through hidden alleyways to the water temple.

Here we guide you through the steps of one of Baliʼs magical rituals, called Melukat, using water to cleanse and purify the outer body and the inner self – the body, mind and soul.
